Martha Del Beato: Running to End Hunger

What does it take to run 26.2 miles? Superb fitness, stamina, sheer willpower? For Martha Del Beato, of Glen Mills, it’s all that plus a desire to assist those in need. Martha organized “Martha’s Run For Hunger” for the 2015 Philadelphia Marathon to benefit the West Chester Food Cupboard, and sat down with us to talk about her project.

Martha, a mother of three, has been running since a teenager. She likes the feeling of accomplishment in an individual sport where you can go “as far as you like.” To train for the Philadelphia marathon (her first, by the way), she ran four days a week, pacing herself with short, medium and long runs.

Although Martha was alone on the course, many contributed their time, effort and money to make her run worthwhile. Her children decorated boxes for food donations and checked them every day after school. Each of them was also given $20 to buy food to donate. According to Martha, they found out that it doesn’t go very far! Over 45 family, friends and neighbors contributed money through her page on the CrowdRise fundraising site. The result: 250 pounds of food and over $3,400 were donated to WCFC.

When asked what motivated her to begin this generous effort, Martha said simply that she wanted to give back to the community, especially this time of year.

Thank you, Martha.
